Weathering the Storm

When I woke up this morning, I began to prepare myself for Hurricane Sandy. That was the storm I knew was coming and had anticipated. However another storm was brewing. Shortly after waking up I received a text that grandmother is in the hospital.

All of a sudden, I found myself in a storm that I was not emotionally prepared to handle.

My grandmother (she likes to be called "Mama") was such a strong and independant lady. She worked for her own money despite living with my aunt. She also went shopping on her own-- navigating the Massachusetts public transit system like a pro.

She even seemed strong when she was diagnosed with bone cancer this summer. Her doctor had caught it early thanks to Mama's regular check ups.  She assured her distraught grand-daughter that she was fine and that the Lord would heal her.

But this emergency room visit really shoke me: My grandmother is not doing fine. She's in a lot of pain.

I am not the only person to be caught by surprise.

A storm snuck up on the 12 diciples as they were sailing to their next meeting. One minute they were sailing in clear weather, perfectly prepared for what's next. The next minute the sky was black, and the sea threatened to bring them under. In that moment, they woke Jesus to inquire "Lord, don't you care if we perish?"

Little did they know that their Father in Heaven had already provided for them: His son was in the boat!

The Lord had also provided for me as well. My husband was there channelling the calming power of the Comforter. We read the Bible, prayed and sang hymns together. Suddenly the storm seem managable.

In that moment I realized the promise of Deuteronomy 31: 6 - "Be strong and courageous. do not be afraid or terriefied because of them for the Lord your God goes  with you. He will never leave nor forsake you."

Marriage is truly a blessing. Not only has God given me a partner in joyous times but also His son to weather the storm.

God always provides us with what we need when we need it. It's rather remarkable when one takes the time to see that.

I'm sorry about the storm you had to go through with your "Mama." I noticed you used the past tense when talking about her. Cancer is such a terrible thing to deal with. My heart goes out to you. I'm glad you have a supportative loving husband to help you cope.

I hope you have a good weekend.

Hello Crystal,

Thank you for your kind words. My grandmother is still living. She leaning on God as she undergoes cancer treatments. Thankfully she is no longer in the hospital and is feeling better for the time being.
